Hello everyone, long time no see! This is Sakari P, producer of PBBGU.
Today’s dev diary is a pretty important one, especially if you’re planning to play PBBGU on Nintendo Switch, so please read carefully!
After a long wait (we appreciate your patience!), PBBGU is finally launching on April 17! We’ve been talking up the fact that the game supports local co-op for up to 4 players, online co-op for 6 players, and versus mode for up to 8 players. Plus, it features full cross-play across 7 platforms: Steam, Epic, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and of course, Switch.
However, and this is the big part, on the Nintendo Switch, if you’re hosting an online session, the number of players is now capped at 4.
If you want to play with 6 or 8 players online using the Switch, you’ll need to enable cross-play* and join a lobby that’s hosted by someone on a different platform. Here’s how it breaks down:
Mode | Nintendo Switch | Other Platforms |
Local Co-op | 4 players | 4 players |
Local Versus | 4 players | 4 players |
Online Co-op (Same platform) | 4 players | 6 players |
Online Versus (Same platform) | 4 players | 8 players |
Online Co-op (Cross-play Host) | 4 players | 6 players |
Online Co-op (Cross-play Guest) | 6 players | 6 players |
Online Versus (Cross-play Host) | 4 players | 8 players |
Online Versus (Cross-play Guest) | 8 players | 8 players |
So yes, only on Switch, playing with 6 or 8 people online comes with a catch.
Why? To be completely honest, Unreal Engine 5 ended up being more demanding on the hardware than we expected. It puts a heavier load on the system, which led to some lag in rendering and even impacted online connectivity.
During the extra two months we spent on the delay, we worked super hard on optimization and trimming down the load wherever possible. But in the end, we had to make the call: to keep the game running smoothly, this change for the Switch version was unavoidable.
To everyone who pre-ordered the Switch version or was looking forward to playing it there—we’re truly sorry. We know it’s not ideal, and we deeply appreciate your understanding. That’s all for now – until next time!
